Changing unwanted Genes- the pros and cons of Genetic Testing and therapy Genes determine the characteristics of organisms and carry the genetic code for a single protein. The codes determine the amino acids in each protein. Proteins are normally enzymes that control metabolic reactions taking place in a cell, which would be part of a metabolic pathway. These metabolic pathways control phenotypes, such as hair colour or blood type. If there were a mutation in the DNA sequence, it would then code a different amino acid, which in turn changes the enzyme or protein. This in turn causes a different phenotype for the person, which could result in a genetic disorder. Recombinant DNA solves this problem, it involves inserting the 'normal' gene into a nucleus of a cell to try and correct the disorder.
