This is when the protein that codes for neck length is produced differently, due to a change in the genetic code (order of bases) in the DNA of the deer. This could have happened in one of three ways: Substitution, where one base is substituted for another, addition, where an extra base is added, or deletion, where one base is omitted from the code. It is not possible for the deer to have just stretched and stretched to become a giraffe.
