Transpiration Transpiration is the loss of water from the aerial parts of the plant i.e. the leaves. It also helps transport water from the soil to the leaves, and keeps the leaves cool. Water is transported up the leaves by the cohesion tension theory. Cohesion tension theory s the process of water being lost (evaporating) through the leaves via the stomata. This creates a decrease in the concentration gradient within the leaf. However within the xylem vessels, in the stem, there is a high concentration gradient. Therefore water moves from the area of high concentration, to the area of low concentration. The movement of water will lower the hydrostatic pressure/tension within the vessels, which is transmitted all the way down the stem, drawing up the water.
