The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature caused by gases in the atmosphere. Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere,. As it reaches the Earth's surface, the sun's energy is absorbed. Once absorbed, is sent back into the atmosphere, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up. This process is called the greenhouse effect. As energy from the sun passes through the atmosphere, a number of things happen to it. About a quarter of the energy is reflected back into space by clouds and particles. Some of the energy is absorbed by clouds, gases and particles in the atmosphere. Some of it passes through the blanket of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane and is: Used for processes such as photosynthesis, heating and melting The heating of the ground by sunlight causes the Earth's surface to radiate infra-red energy; a small...
